This mobile phone has actually limited functions. This phone is not definitely created for those who prefer smart phones because its style is what it has to offer. The best feature on the N97? Memory? Keyboard? No it’s Ovi!

Applications address the limitations of our phones; shifting new interest into tired devices either by bringing wished features or an entirely new use not considered before. Ovi will be “the door” to bring those applications to our devices. So that’s why, for me, the best feature on the N97 is OVI. Once I get used/”bored” to the keyboard/touch screen/memory and other things it does, applications will spice it up and give it life. What’s great for everyone is that Ovi isn’t exclusive to the N97.

If Nokia were to make an exact clone of the iPhone, with identical UI, at the same price, but the only thing different were internet services, Apple would win the consumer because of their thriving ecosystem of developers that have made such a content packed app store.

Apps - that’s what Nokia used to be good at, at least for those who knew where to find the apps; you get the S60 device instead of another type of phone because of the plethora of software available for it.

[Of course, there's another side which I can't and won't cover, which is the relative ease to develop an Apple app instead of a Symbian one. This perceived ease however, is part of a self feeding cycle - more users, more money, attract more developers, better apps, more users, more info about how to do make apps, more apps, more users more money, more developers...etc.]

Nokia already has a wealth of applications for S60, albeit some of them no longer functional on newer devices (shame really). However, it’s so hard to get them to the user. The apps are dispersed among several websites, some containing overlapping catalogues, some exclusives and some sites contain apps only from that particular developer.

Nokia N97 Clone

If you can’t wait till June or don’t want to burn a whole in your pocket, here’s the N97 clone - and it’s a pretty good copy that only a techy would notice. It’s also not just the touch screen shell, but it even has the flick stand sliding mechanism. But best of all, check out the last photo with the neon blue backlights on the keypad! Slightly garish, but infinitely better than the original N97’s attempt of soft glow orange from the 1980s.

What would you change about the Nokia 5800?

Engadget has asked it’s readers, “How would you change Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic?”. I think for the price, the 5800 packs a lot of punches you’d expect from the high-end and expensive Nseries. But as in everything, there’s always ample room for improvement.

It seems though that a lot of the features that people are wishing the 5800 had are already in the upcoming N97: bigger screen, keyboard, more memory, faster UI, better camera, USB charging.

So should the question be, how would you change the N97? As much as I love it, I do not have enough fingers to count out changes/features I would have liked to have seen/expected on the N97. Oh well, I’m still blinded by it and cannot wait for June.

Nokia N97 vs Nokia N86

The s60blog has put the N97 and the N96 into a fight, but which one wins out? I agree with Carlton in basically that it shouldn’t really matter which is the best, but “WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU”.

There’s no point honking all out for the N97 if you don’t want a full screen keyboard, or a huge 3.5″ touch screen, or 32GB of inbuilt memory. If you’re looking for an upcoming symbian S60 phone focused on imaging, with 8MP you should go for the Samsung i8910 - er I mean the Nokia N86. Seriously, for a relatively small package, physical standard keypad, dual sliding mechanism with dedicated music buttons then the N86 is for you.

I’ve been very focused on good imaging in phones too, but if I’m going to miss something as important as Xenon flash (most of the snaps I take are in poorly lit clubs), I would at least want a new experience of keyboard and touch screen, rather than something that’s basically the slow evolution (a.k.a. rehash) of the N95.

However, for other people, the N97 may just be too big. They may not like/need touch screen or just want standard phone keypad. Again, if those same people wanted a good camera phone too, then the N86 is the best bet (out of either the N97 or n86)

If the dual slide isn’t too much of a big deal, then does the Samsung INNOV8 better meet the criteria in wanting the N86 over the N97? We’ll just have to see how much the 28mm wide angle lens and variable aperture brings to the imaging table. For now, if you want S60 with standard slider keypad and 8MP, then go for the INNOV8.

For just N97 and N86 alone, well N86 is small pocketable imaging and N97 is your fat flurry of multimedia. Although the direct lineage of the N95 is the N86, it is the N87 THAT truly encapsulates the purpose of the N95 - multimedia computer/what computers have become/the congvergence device - the Nokia Nseries Flagship.

Nokia 5800 to be the most successful phone

With every feature the 5800 has ( 3.2″ Touch screen, excellent loud speakers, 3.2mp Carl Zeiss Lens, excellent music player, GPS Navigation, decent web browser with Flash support for things like YouTube - being the phone in the Dark Knight movie :p) and the price which Nokia have set it at, it’s not surprising it has sold so well. Accounting for 20% of touch screen handsets worldwide, the 5800 had an amazing start with UK contracts, being on O2 and now T-Mobile at a base start price of £15, 100 minutes and unlimited text or around £200 on pay as you go (which is always unlocked in Carphone Warehouse - no I’m not being paid to say this).

Although its an XpressMusic handset, denoting that it shouldn’t be worth anywhere near what Nokia asks from their Nseries, it is more than a rival when put side by side against Nokia’s top end devices. Suffice to say, the 5800 is a bargain, and so it’s understandable why Nokia would think it may become one of their most successful handsets.

So will a knock down price be the key also, for ensuring the upcoming N97 is also a winner? I’m not even going to begin at how the N97 is more of a tugboat for the next flagship instead of being the flagship itself, so the N97 (with its relatively non new features ) should arrive to our shores at a relatively reasonable price. Or at least fall in price sharply after a couple of weeks. That or doom it to failure as everyone else goes for seemingly better specification-wise alternatives at possibly cheaper prices (…Samsung i8910 - Omnia HD, Sony Ericsson Idou, Palm Pre, 3rd Gen iPhone)
